Holter Monitoring Q & A

What is Holter monitoring?

A Holter monitor is a portable electrocardiogram (EKG) device that measures the electrical activity of your heart for a continuous 24 hours or longer.

You may need Holter monitoring if you have persistent symptoms that an in-office, resting EKG can’t diagnose. These symptoms can include:

  • Fainting
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Heart palpitations
  • Low blood pressure

Dr. Mobley may also request that you wear a Holter monitor to capture abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) that occur from time to time or during strenuous activities or times of stress.

What happens during Holter monitoring?

During your appointment for unusual heart-related symptoms, Dr. Mobley performs a physical exam and reviews your medical history. He may request an in-office EKG to evaluate your heart’s function before recommending Holter monitoring.

If you’re a candidate for Holter monitoring, Dr. Mobley connects electrode sensors to the surface of the skin on your abdomen and chest. The sensors have wires that connect to a recording device that you wear around your waist.

Typically, you can expect to wear the Holter monitor for 24-48 hours, depending on the reason for your testing. You go about your usual routine while wearing the monitor to capture information about your heart’s function during activities and while at rest.

Keep a written record of your activities and any symptoms you experience during your test. Dr. Mobley also provides guidance to help you care for the Holter monitor and strategies to keep it dry while you wear it.

How do I get the results of my test?

After your monitoring period is complete, you return to Heart Care of Conroe so Dr. Mobley can remove the sensors and print your test results.

The monitoring system collects information about the electrical activity of your heart while you wear it. That information helps Dr. Mobley learn more about how fast your heart is beating, the steadiness of your heart’s rhythm, and the strength of the electrical impulses.

If Holter monitoring reveals any abnormal results about your heart function, Dr. Mobley can discuss your options for further diagnostic testing and treatments.
