Exercise Stress Testing

What is exercise stress testing?

Exercise stress testing is a noninvasive, diagnostic procedure that determines how well your heart functions when it’s working at its top capacity.

Dr. Mobley may recommend exercise stress testing to ensure your heart receives enough oxygen and blood during physical activity. It also helps him identify the cause of chest pain and other symptoms related to coronary artery disease.

If you’re over 40, have a smoking history, or have other risk factors for heart disease, Dr. Mobley may order routine exercise stress testing as part of your preventive health care plan or before you begin a new exercise program.

What happens during exercise stress testing?

Before your exercise stress testing appointment, Dr. Mobley performs a physical exam and reviews your medical history. He provides guidance to help you prepare for your test in advance, such as avoiding caffeine and stopping certain medications.

On the day of your test, wear loose-fitting clothing and comfortable shoes, as you’ll spend time walking on a treadmill.

Dr. Mobley connects you to an electrocardiogram (EKG) machine to monitor the electrical activity of your heart during exercise. The EKG has sensors that attach to the skin on your chest, arms, and legs.

You start walking slowly on the treadmill. Your speed increases until you reach a target heart rate. If you have any difficulties walking or experience chest pain, weakness, or dizziness during the test, Dr. Mobley can stop the treadmill and monitor your heart rate and breathing until you feel better.

How long does it take to get the results of exercise stress testing?

After exercise stress testing, expect to spend some time resting in the office, so Dr. Mobley can monitor your blood pressure and other vital signs.

After he evaluates your test results, Dr. Mobley can discuss the need for additional diagnostic testing. If you have an irregular heart rhythm or other complications, Dr. Mobley can create a treatment plan to manage your condition.
