Carotoid Doppler Q & A

What is a carotid doppler?

A carotid doppler, also known as a carotid ultrasound, is a noninvasive diagnostic test to evaluate the circulation of blood through the carotid arteries.

The carotid arteries are the large arteries in your neck that carry oxygenated blood into your brain. Blockages in the carotid arteries can significantly increase your risk for complications like stroke and brain damage.

The test uses ultrasound imaging technology to identify plaque build-up, blood clots, and other obstructions that block the flow of blood to your brain.

When do I need a carotid doppler?

You may need a carotid doppler if you have high blood pressure, abnormal heart sounds, or risk factors for carotid artery blockages or stroke, such as:

  • Stress
  • Smoking
  • Heavy salt intake
  • Weight challenges
  • Lack of exercise
  • Use of birth control pills

You may also be at increased risk for a stroke as you get older due to carotid stenosis — a narrowing of your carotid arteries — or if you have a family history of heart disease or stroke.

What happens during a carotid doppler?

A carotid doppler is an outpatient procedure that typically takes 30 minutes or less. Heart Care of Conroe offers on-site carotid doppler testing in a comfortable office environment. You don’t need to prepare for the test in advance but leave your jewelry at home and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

Dr. Mobley first applies a gel over your neck to help the handheld transducer glide easily over your skin. The ultrasound device sends real-time images of your arteries to an external monitor that he watches to evaluate blood flow.

After your test, Dr. Mobley reviews your results with you. He may recommend additional diagnostic testing to confirm a blockage or can customize a treatment plan to lower your risk for stroke and other complications.

You can go back to your usual activities after your carotid doppler is complete without limitations. However, if there are blockages in your carotid artery, Dr. Mobley may ask you to modify certain activities to prevent strain on your heart.
