Echocardiogram

What is echocardiography?

Echocardiography, also known as an echocardiogram or echo, is a diagnostic test that uses sound wave technology to generate moving images of your heart. With echocardiography, Dr. Mobley can:

  • Measure the size and shape of your heart
  • Evaluate your heart chambers
  • Assess the function of your heart valves
  • Look for blood clots
  • Check for fluid buildup around the heart
  • Look for problems with the aorta

Dr. Mobley performs echocardiography to assess general heart health, diagnose heart disease, and monitor the effectiveness of your heart disease treatment plan.

Who needs echocardiography?

The Heart Care of Conroe team determines if you need an echocardiogram.

Dr. Mobley may recommend the diagnostic test if you have symptoms that might indicate a problem with your heart, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, or dizziness.

Echocardiography may help diagnose heart problems such as coronary artery disease, a heart valve disorder, or heart abnormalities.

What happens during echocardiography?

The echocardiogram is a noninvasive, painless, in-office diagnostic test that takes about an hour.

During echocardiography, you lie on an exam table, and a technician attaches electrodes to your chest, which measures and monitors the electrical activity of your heart. Next, Dr. Mobley applies gel to the skin on your chest and moves the ultrasound wand over your heart.

The ultrasound wand sends sound waves into your body, which bounce off your heart and return. The ultrasound wand sends the information to a computer that translates the sound waves into moving images your provider can see on a computer screen.

In some cases, your provider may inject a special substance into your blood vessels before your echo, allowing Dr. Mobley to see how blood moves through your heart.
