EKG Q & A
What is an EKG?
An electrocardiogram (EKG) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical signals in your heart.
The test can determine if your heart is beating at a normal rate and strength. Dr. Mobley may also use EKG testing to evaluate the position and size of the chambers in your heart.
Some common heart issues an EKG can reveal include:
- Artery blockages
- Heart failure
- Heart attack
- Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
If your EKG results are abnormal, it may indicate that you have heart damage or disease.
When would I need an EKG?
You may need an EKG if you have unexplained symptoms that may relate to a heart disorder. After a physical exam and a review of your medical history, Dr. Mobley may request an EKG to diagnose the underlying cause of:
- Chest pain
- Dizziness
- Rapid heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Persistent fatigue
An EKG may also be part of preventive testing for heart disease if you have a family history of a heart-related condition or are preparing for surgery. If you’re taking medications to treat known heart disease, you may need occasional EKG testing to determine if your treatment is working.
If you have a pacemaker to correct heart rhythm abnormalities, Dr. Mobley can use an EKG to ensure the device is working properly.
What happens during an EKG?
Heart Care of Conroe offers in-office EKGs. During your test, you lie comfortably on an exam table. Dr. Mobley connects electrode sensors to the skin on your chest, arms, and legs.
The electrodes attach to wires that connect to a computer. With each heartbeat, the computer records information about the electrical activity of your heart and creates a printout of your results.
Dr. Mobley evaluates the results of your test during your appointment. If your results are abnormal, you may need additional testing to confirm your diagnosis.
An EKG only takes a few minutes. Afterward, you can go back to work and your usual activities without limitations.
If you have unexplained heart palpitations or other symptoms that need a diagnosis, call Heart Care of Conroe today to schedule an appointment or book a consultation online.
