Cardiac Catheterization Q & A
What is cardiac catheterization?
Cardiac catheterization is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure that examines how well your heart works. The test can also help identify blockages in the arteries that lead to your heart or damage to the tissues of your heart that increase your risk for heart attack and other complications.
During the procedure, Dr. Mobley inserts a flexible tube (catheter) through a blood vessel starting in your groin to access your heart. He follows the catheter as it moves through your body using special X-ray imaging technology.
Why would I need cardiac catheterization?
You may need a cardiac catheterization to confirm a diagnosis of an underlying heart condition like:
- Heart failure
- Congenital heart disease
- Coronary artery disease
- Heart muscle damage
- Heart valve dysfunction
Dr. Mobley may also perform other procedures during a cardiac catheterization. Procedures may include an angioplasty to open blocked arteries, stent placement to keep arteries open, or a biopsy to remove a tissue sample from the heart for further testing. That ensures you receive the treatment you need without needing a second catheterization.
What happens during cardiac catheterization?
During your appointment for cardiac catheterization, you can expect to receive an intravenous (IV) line in your arm. Through the IV, Dr. Mobley provides a sedative medication to keep you relaxed and comfortable.
Making a small incision in your groin, Dr. Mobley threads one or more catheters through your blood vessels and guides them to your heart. He can use the catheter to take a tissue sample, widen your arteries, or make necessary repairs to your heart.
You may need to take deep breaths or hold your arms in certain positions through your test depending on the reason for your cardiac catheterization. After the procedure is complete, you spend time in recovery until the sedative wears off.
Dr. Mobley provides information to help you care for your incisions before you can go home to rest. If the test results from your cardiac catheterization are abnormal, Dr. Mobley will discuss your options for moving forward with additional diagnostic testing or treatments for heart defects or disease.
